El Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco (Ccut) through the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), reappropriates a landmark architectural complex which occupied since its inception the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE). In recent months, after his abandonment by several years, recover the premises for the purpose of creating a cultural environment that encouraged and enriched by various cultural projects, the community life of the nation's capital. Today is again the reuse of urban elements that appear as part of the history of the city, creating opportunities for expression and appropriation previously unimaginable spaces for uses outside wing urban expression. Urban Appropriations
Based on proposals received by call artistic parking spot 08, the theme this year revolves around the urban phenomenon. The main lines of work according to the selected proposals are:
1. The concept of contemporary ruin
We challenge the ideological construct public buildings erected in the city of Mexico in the sixties. These buildings are now ruins and are read as the failure of this ambitious policy agenda that lasted for seventy years. There is a historical, a power cut, abrupt between political regimes. Asks what is suspended, the remainder of the transition.
Another approach to the issue of debris, revolves around objects, endangered icon within the Federal District. Discontinued items still in our background image. Its remnants were abandoned, neglected and obsolete.
2. Consumer values and contemporary
The waste materials of society offered for sale, questioning the values of the alienated-globalized society. We see a waste-recovery-useless objects that acquire a commercial value when you enter a particular market. There is a reflection on the objects of consumption, trade values of capitalism, ridiculing the real culture and values of contemporary society.
3. Marginality, fracture and interstitium
A reflection on the urban elements of exclusion zones in the metropolitan area. Cultural symbols of exclusion zones as Ecatepec, Iztapalapa or Neza. Urban violence, poverty, pollution and despair. The folk music grupera, Grenache and fayuca. A dialogue between center and periphery, between gap and limit.
4. Urban myths, anecdotes
Work city puts in between that reality and fiction. The rumor, as deformation of the message. It questions the veracity of the stories circulating within society. Crisis vs. verisimilitude. improbable.
Today's world of communication and appearances replacing reality. The manipulation of the media in making sense of reality through the appearance and fiction.
5. Structures, landscapes, urban pieces
Idealization of cities, utopias. Problematization of architecture in shaping spaces. Architectural structures hosted by memory. Notion of architecture that does not fulfill its function if it is not inhabited. Presence and time. The outer room is the human body so that the interior room is the spirit, one can not exist without the other. Architecture- body, correspondence between them.
6. Appropriation of space, permissive city
Anonymity as a model of space appropriation. The use of pseudonyms by artists to intervene in the sample space. Image Recovery: rhetoric. Urban streams of thought, religion, science officer, official history, atheism, pseudo beliefs. Building one's own epic, the legend itself. Tlatelolco
parking spot to host 08, was taken as part of the curatorial discourse revalued by its historical aspects. The Student Movement of 1968 played an active role in building democracy in the nation and its decisive influence on the mentality changes that occurred in different areas of Mexican society from the last third of the twentieth century. This movement has become an emblem of collective expression and sense of rupture for nearly four decades. The complex is part of the creative imagination of artists of different disciplines and is a starting point for further inquiry into the city.
As for the public who visit us have the presence of artists, collectors, students and the general public interested in art and culture. The experience of the exhibition seeks to grow on the viewer questions about man, society, life, the city and the world around us surrounding both to promote awareness about the work of contemporary art in Mexico in an urban environment.
